2 is the debut full-length studio album by Canadian musician Mac DeMarco. It was released in October 2012 on the Captured Tracks label. DeMarco moved from Vancouver to Montreal in 2011. There, he recorded an EP under his own name and Roll Nightclub. Featuring slowed-down vocals and elements of glam rock, this recording garnered enough attention that his label, Captured Tracks, agreed to finance a full-length album. DeMarco shifted his style from Rock and Roll Nightclub to 2, his glam and crooning singing style were dropped for a more standard approach to guitar rock; the album was recorded in DeMarco's Montreal apartment, in the Mile End neighbourhood. DeMarco made underwear. In a June 2012 interview, DeMarco announced; the album contains a single acoustic track, 'Still Together', which features DeMarco using falsetto singing in the chorus. The opener, 'Cooking Up Something Good', uses a song structure where a catchy verse transitions to a 'blindsiding' darker chorus. 'Robson Girl' juxtaposes a 'sweet' verse with a guitar-shredding chorus.
Lyrically, DeMarco covers growing up in suburbia, failed love and family secrets, the last featuring in 'Cooking Up Something Good'. 'Ode to Viceroy' is a tribute to the singer's favourite brand of cigarettes. DeMarco is apologizing to his mother in 'Freaking Out the Neighbourhood', trying to convince a girl to leave town with him in 'The Stars Keep on Calling My Name'. In September 2014, DeMarco stated in a 'What's in My Bag?' Interview video at Amoeba Records in San Francisco, California that he had been inspired by the album art for Haruomi Hosono's Hosono House for the design of 2’s album cover. In the same interview, DeMarco points out his cover’s striking but coincidental similarity to Bruce Springsteen's The River; the album was compared by several reviewers to Days. NME likened him to fictional character Ferris Bueller. DeMarco's guitar work was praised by several reviewers; the Guardian remarked that, although the initial tracks have promise, the album 'never quite delivers' and criticised its 'unvarying' tone.
Pitchfork gave an enthusiastic review. Reviewer Sam Hockley-Smith commented positively on DeMarco's lyrical depth; the website placed the album at 43rd on their '50 Best Albums of the Year' retrospective. The album was named a longlisted nominee for the 2013 Polaris Music Prize on June 13, 2013; the album was recognized as one of The 100 Best Albums of the Decade So Far, a list published by Pitchfork in August 2014. In 2019, Pitchfork ranked the album at number 149 on their list of 'The 200 Best Albums of the 2010s'. All tracks are written by Mac DeMarco
Viceroy is an American brand of cigarettes owned and manufactured by R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in the United States and British American Tobacco outside of the United States. Viceroy was introduced by Brown & Williamson in 1936 and was the world's first cork-tipped filter cigarette, it was a mid-priced brand at the time, equivalent to B&W's Raleigh cigarettes flagship brand, but more expensive than Wings cigarettes introduced by B&W in 1929. In 1952 Viceroy was the first brand to add a celluloseacetate filter which established a new industry standard. In 1953, Viceroy Filter Kings were introduced. In 1990, Viceroy Box Kings and Lights Box Kings were introduced on the U. S. market, followed by Viceroy Ultra Lights Kings and Ultra Lights 100's in 1992. New Viceroy 100's box styles changed in the 1990s, Viceroy Menthol was introduced in 2000. All Viceroy styles changed to a more contemporary packaging on packs and cartons without changes to the product blend. On July 30, 2004, parent company Reynolds American was formed as a joint venture between the U.

S. branch of BAT and R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company; the Viceroy brand was brought under the Reynolds American umbrella as a part of B&W under RJR Tobacco. After the B&W merger, the Viceroy brand has been played down in the U. S. continuing to be sold on the markets where demand is strong, like Russia, the Czech Republic, Romania, the Middle East and Chile. Viceroy Red and Blue are sold as a budget brand in Canada. In July 2017, it was announced that British American Tobacco would be phasing out sales of its Viceroy Red cigarettes in Argentina and replace them with Rothmans, according to an M-Brain story relayed by the TMA; the story said that Argentina was the first Latin American country to which BAT had introduced Rothmans. Brown & Williamson made various magazine advertisements to promote the Viceroy brand. Various TV ads were made to promote the brand from the 1950s to the 1970s. One of the most notable Viceroy advertisements, were the ones that advertised that, because Viceroy cigarettes were filter-tipped, less tar would manifest on and between the teeth, would thus be a 'healthier' alternative to other brands.
A slogan used in the 1940s ads at the time was 'As your dentist, I would recommend Viceroys'. In the 1970s, Brown & Williamson realised that the cigarette brand was smoked by women and couples because the Viceroy brand was 'less masculine than its key competition' and the brand had a 'feminine orientation' according to internal documents. From the early 1970s onwards, B&W started to sponsor the brand via the Vel's Parnelli Jones Racing team in autosport championships such as the United States Auto Club and Formula 1 to give the brand a more 'masculine' additude, similar to Marlboro. In 1974, Viceroy partnered with TAG Heuer and produced a special version of the black-dialed Autavia, offered for US$88; this version of the Autavia was called the 'Viceroy' and advertisements for this promotion featured racer Parnelli Jones. Various adverts were made to promote both the Autavia watch. In the 1970s, Viceroy was proposed as part of a B&W marketing test to see whether children could be encouraged to become smokers.
This was discovered by the Federal Trade Commission during a closed investigation of cigarette company advertising practices. The Viceroy ad campaign was not carried out; the Viceroy brand was involved in public controversy beginning in 1994 when U. S. Food and Drug Administration Commissioner David Aaron Kessler revealed that B&W had been found growing genetically modified tobacco plants in South America, the plants engineered to produce increased levels of nicotine. Viceroy King Size and Viceroy Lights King Size cigarettes made in 1993 were identified as some of the B&W brands carrying 'approximately 10% of this genetically bred high-nicotine tobacco called Y-1,' referring to Y1 tobacco. Further controversy came in 1995 when former B&W vice president Jeffrey Wigand, a research chemist, revealed that B&W had been adding chemicals to the B&W cigarette brands Kool and Viceroy to increase smokers' addiction to nicotine. Viceroy sponsored the Vel's Parnelli Jones Racing team in the USAC Car Championship in the 1972 and 1973 seasons.
Viceroy sponsored the Vel's Parnelli Jones Racing team in the 1975 seasons. Viceroy was a sponsor of the Hong Kong Viceroy Cup, held from 1969 until 1998. Canadian singer-songwriterMac DeMarco made a song called 'Ode to Viceroy', a tribute to his favourite brand of cigarettes; the song was released on his album 2 in June 2012 and was released in October 2012. In an interview on Thrasher Magazine, Mac said about the song: A lot of people don't understand that that's a reference to cigarettes because that brand doesn't exist in a lot of places in the world, it used to be a big American cigarette brand.... The idea of the song isn't, try cigarettes! It's more, like, I have an addiction! In Canada all of the cigarettes are really moderated by the government so they wouldn't do anything and that's a good thing. Viceroy cigarettes were or still are sold in the following countries: United States, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Argentina, United Kingdom, West Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Belarus, Georgia, Uzbekistan, Israel, Hong Kong and Singapore.

On March 5, 2019, DeMarco announced his fourth studio album, Here Comes the Cowboy and shared the first single off the album, 'Nobody'. The album was released on May 2019 on Mac's Record Label. A controversy emerged once it was pointed out online that DeMarco's album shared a similar title to the 2018 album Be the Cowboy by Mitski and that her album had included a single called 'Nobody'.
According to Pitchfork, DeMarco had 'never listened to Mitski's album and learned about her album and song title only after determining his own album title and single'. Mitski responded to the controversy on Twitter, stating, 'I'm 100% sure mac & I just went fishing in the same part of the collective unconscious!'. The album received mixed reviews from audiences upon release. It
Glam rock is a style of rock music that developed in the United Kingdom in the early 1970s performed by musicians who wore outrageous costumes and hairstyles platform shoes and glitter. Glam artists drew on diverse sources across music and throwaway pop culture, ranging from bubblegum pop and 1950s rock and roll to cabaret, science fiction, complex art rock; the flamboyant clothing and visual styles of performers were camp or androgynous, have been described as playing with nontraditional gender roles. Glitter rock was a more extreme version of glam; the UK charts were inundated with glam rock acts from 1971 to 1975. The March 1971 appearance of T. Rex frontman Marc Bolan on the BBC's music show Top of the Pops, wearing glitter and satins, is cited as the beginning of the movement. Other British glam rock artists include David Bowie, Mott the Hoople, Slade, Roxy Music and Gary Glitter; those not central to the genre, such as Elton John, Rod Stewart and Freddie Mercury of Queen adopted glam styles.
In the US the scene was much less prevalent, with Alice Cooper and Lou Reed the only American artists to score a hit. Other US glam artists include New York Dolls, Suzi Quatro, Iggy Pop and Jobriath, it declined after the mid-1970s, but influenced other musical genres including punk rock, glam metal, New Romantic and gothic rock. Glam rock can be seen as a fashion as well as musical subgenre. Glam artists rejected the revolutionary rhetoric of the late 1960s rock scene, instead glorifying decadence and the simple structures of earlier pop music. In response to these characteristics, scholars such as I. Taylor and D. Wall criticized Glam rock as 'offensive and cultural emasculation'. Artists drew on such musical influences as bubblegum pop, the brash guitar riffs of hard rock, stomping rhythms, 1950s rock and roll, filtering them through the recording innovations of the late 1960s, it became diverse, varying between the simple rock and roll revivalism of figures like Alvin Stardust to the complex art pop of Roxy Music.
In its beginning, however, it was a youth-oriented reaction to the creeping dominance of progressive rock and concept albums – what Bomp! called the 'overall denim dullness' of 'a deadly boring, prematurely matured music scene'. Visually it was a mesh of various styles, ranging from 1930s Hollywood glamour, through 1950s pin-up sex appeal, pre-war cabaret theatrics, Victorian literary and symbolist styles, science fiction, to ancient and occult mysticism and mythology. Glam is most noted for its sexual and gender ambiguity and representations of androgyny, beside extensive use of theatrics, it was prefigured by the flamboyant English composer Noël Coward his 1931 song 'Mad Dogs and Englishmen', with music writer Daryl Easlea stating, 'Noël Coward's influence on people like Bowie, Roxy Music and Cockney Rebel was immense. It suggested style and surface were as important as depth and substance. Time magazine noted Coward's'sense of personal style, a combination of cheek and chic and poise', it reads like a glam manifesto.'
Showmanship and gender identity manipulation acts included the Cockettes and Alice Cooper, the latter of which combined glam with shock rock. Glam rock emerged from the English psychedelic and art rock scenes of the late 1960s and can be seen as both an extension of, a reaction against, those trends, its origins are associated with Marc Bolan, who had renamed his acoustic duo T. Rex and taken up electric instruments by the end of the 1960s. Bolan was, in the words of music critic Ken Barnes, 'the man who started it all'. Cited as the moment of inception is Bolan's appearance on the BBC music show Top of the Pops in March 1971 wearing glitter and satins, to perform what would be his second UK Top 10 hit, 'Hot Love'; the Independent states that Bolan's appearance on Top of the Pops “permitted a generation of teeny-boppers to begin playing with the idea of androgyny”. T. Rex's 1971 album. In 1973, a few months after the release of the album Tanx, Bolan captured the front cover of Melody Maker magazine with the declaration 'Glam rock is dead!'.
Mac Demarco Album Review
From late 1971 a minor star, David Bowie developed his Ziggy Stardust persona, incorporating elements of professional makeup and performance into his act. Bowie, in a 1972 interview in which he noted that other artists described as glam rock were doing different work, said 'I think glam rock is a lovely way to categorize me and it's nicer to be one of the leaders of it'. Bolan and Bowie were soon followed in the style by acts including Roxy Music, Slade, Mott the Hoople and Alvin Stardust; the popularity of glam rock in the UK was such that three glam rock bands had major UK Christmas hit singles. Glam was not only a successful trend in UK popular music, it became dominant in other aspects of British popular culture during the 1970s. A heavier variant of glam rock, emphasising guitar riffcentric songs, driving rhythms and live performance with audience participation, were represented by bands like Slade and Mott the Hoople, with followers such as Def Leppard, Cheap Trick, Kiss, Bon Jovi, Quiet Riot, some of which either covered Slade compositions or composed new songs based on Slade templates.
While successful in the single charts in the UK few of these musicians were able to make a serious impact in the US.
Falsetto is the vocal register occupying the frequency range just above the modal voice register and overlapping with it by one octave. It is produced in whole or in part. Cited in the context of singing, falsetto, a characteristic of phonation by both sexes, is one of four main spoken vocal registers recognized by speech pathology; the term falsetto is most used in the context of singing to refer to a type of vocal phonation that enables the singer to sing notes beyond the vocal range of the normal or modal voice. The typical tone of falsetto register or M2, has a characteristic breathy and flute-like sound free of overtones—which is more limited than its modal counterpart in both dynamic variation and tone quality. However, William Vennard points out that while most untrained people can sound comparatively 'breathy' or 'hooty' when using falsetto production, there are in rarer cases individuals who have developed a much stronger falsetto sound production which has more 'ring' to it; the modal voice, or modal register, falsetto register differ in the action of the vocal cords.
Production of the normal voice involves vibration of the entire vocal cord, with the glottis opening first at the bottom and at the top. Production of falsetto, on the other hand, vibrates only the ligamentous edges of the vocal folds while leaving each fold's body relaxed. Transition from modal voice to falsetto occurs when each vocal cord's main body, or vocalis muscle, enabling the cricothyroid muscles to stretch the vocal ligaments. William Vennard describes this process as follows: With the vocalis muscles relaxed it is possible for the cricothyroids to place great longitudinal tension upon the vocal ligaments; the tension can be increased in order to raise the pitch after the maximum length of the cords has been reached. This makes the vocal folds thin so; the vocalis muscles fall to the sides of the larynx and the vibration take place entirely in the ligaments. In the modal register, the vocal folds are seen to contact with each other during each vibration, closing the gap between them if just for a short time.
This closure cuts off the escaping air. When the air pressure in the trachea rises as a result of this closure, the folds are blown apart, while the vocal processes of the arytenoid cartilages remain in apposition; this creates an oval gap between the folds and some air escapes, lowering the pressure inside the trachea. Rhythmic repetition of this movement creates the note. In falsetto, the vocal folds are seen to be blown apart and in untrained falsetto singers a permanent oval orifice is left in the middle between the edges of the two folds through which a certain volume of air escapes continuously as long as the register is engaged. In skilled countertenors, the mucous membrane of the vocal folds contact with each other during each vibration cycle; the arytenoid cartilages are held in firm apposition in this voice register also. The length or size of the oval orifice or separation between the folds can vary, but it is known to get bigger as the pressure of air pushed out is increased; the folds are made up of fatty tissue.
The folds are covered on the surface by laryngeal mucous membrane, supported deeper down underneath by the innermost fibres of the thyroarytenoid muscle. In falsetto the extreme membranous edges, i.e. the edges furthest away from the middle of the gap between the folds, appear to be the only parts vibrating. The mass corresponding to the innermost part of the thyro-arytenoid muscle remains still and motionless; some singers feel a sense of muscular relief when they change from the modal register to the falsetto register. Research has revealed that not all speakers and singers produce falsetto in the same way; some speakers and singers leave the cartilaginous portion of the glottis open, only the front two-thirds of the vocal ligaments enter the vibration. The resulting sound, typical of many adolescents, may be pure and flutelike, but is soft and anemic in quality. In others, the full length of the glottis closes in each cycle. In still others, a phenomenon known as damping appears, with the amount of glottal opening becoming less and less as the pitch rises, until only a tiny slit appears on the highest pitches.
The mutational chink type of falsetto is considered inefficient and weak, but there is little information available about the relative strengths and weaknesses of the other two types. Both sexes are physically capable of phonating in the falsetto register. Prior to research done by scientists in the 1950s and 1960s, it was believed that only men were able to produce falsetto. One possible explanation for this failure to recognize the female falsetto sooner is that when men phonate in the falsetto register there is a much more pronounced change in timbre and dynamic level between the modal and falsetto registers than there is in female voices; this is due in part to the difference in the length and mass of the vocal folds and to the difference in frequency ranges. However, motion picture and video studies of laryngeal action prove that women can and do produce falsetto, electromyographic studies by several leading speech pathologists and vocal pedagogists provide further confirmation. Furthermore, the existence of a great many female yodelers throughout history demonstrates the female falsetto.
While scientific evidence has proven that women have a falsetto regist
Rams is a 2015 Icelandic drama film written and directed by Grímur Hákonarson. It was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival where it won the Prix Un Certain Regard, it was screened in the Contemporary World Cinema section of the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival. It was selected as the Icelandic entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards but it was not nominated. In 2016, online newspaper Kjarninn voted it the second greatest Icelandic film of all time. Two sheep farming brothers haven't spoken to each other for forty years due to differences in their personalities, complicated by one brother's poor temper and alcoholism, the other brother's resentment and jealousy, they live in adjacent houses on the family farm owned by the sober brother. Both are unmarried and attached to their flocks. A prize-winning ram belonging to the alcoholic brother is found to have scrapie, causing all the sheep in the whole region – though they show no symptoms – to be destroyed as a precaution so that the disease does not spread to the entire country.
The farmers must burn all their hay and disinfect the barns. The sober brother, kills his own flock before the biohazards team arrive, but he hides a few ewes and a ram in the basement of his house, as they are the last of their breed, his errant brother Kiddi blames Gummi for reporting the disease and the subsequent kill, inflaming tensions between them. Kiddi refuses to kill his own sheep, after authorities intervene and exterminate them, he becomes more drunk and abusive, he refuses to clean his barn. Upon his return, sobered-up Kiddi accidentally discovers Gummi's hidden flock of sheep and wants to help save them, but Gummi refuses all association; when a member of the cleanup team discovers the hidden sheep, the two brothers are forced to collaborate and they attempt to drive them into the highlands in a blizzard. Their quad bike bogs down in a snowdrift, the brothers become separated; the drove wander off, Kiddi finds Gummi in a snowdrift, near death from hypothermia. He attempts to save his brother by building a makeshift snow shelter.
The film ends with Kiddi attempting to warm Gummi in the womb-like shelter, acknowledging their reconciliation. Sigurður Sigurjónsson as Gummi Theódór Júlíusson as Kiddi Charlotte Bøving as Katrin Jon Benonysson as Runólfur Gunnar Jónsson as Grímur Þorleifur Einarsson as SindriSveinn Ólafur Gunnarsson as Bjarni Rams was based on a story told by the director's father about two brothers sharing the same land who had a falling out over a woman and stopped speaking to each other for 40 years. Grímur liked the tragicomic underpinnings of the story, noting that such conflicts can be common in rural Iceland and beyond. 'These brothers are not only in sheep farming, they are in the parliament.”The film was shot with anamorphic lenses to impart the feeling of a western and was inspired by the 2007 film There Will Be Blood, as well as the work of the Finnish filmmaker, Aki Kaurismäki. Sigurður Sigurjónsson and Theodór Júlíusson, two of Iceland's best known actors, prepared for their roles by working on a sheep farm.
Most of the other characters were actual farmers. Rams received critical acclaim from critics. On the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 95% based on 99 reviews, with a weighted average rating of 7.7/10. The critical consensus states: 'Rams transcends its remote location -- and somewhat esoteric storyline -- by using the relatable dynamic between two stubborn brothers to speak universal truths.' On Metacritic, the film has a normalized score of 82 out of 100, based on 24 critics, indicating 'universal acclaim'. Rams won the prize for Un Certain Regard for 2015, the top prize conferred by a jury presided over by Isabella Rossellini. At the 2015 Transilvania International Film Festival, Rams won the Special Jury Award and won the Audience Award, it won the Audience award at the Tromsø International Film Festival and Iranian Fajr Film Festival in 2016.
